WHAT IS FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE?
Functional Medicine is a systems biology-based approach to healthcare in which the underlying (or root) causes of disease are identified and addressed in order to help patients achieve vitality. This practice accounts for the individual differences in each patient, thus personalizing the healthcare and creating a therapeutic partnership between patient and physician. Functional medicine often involves genetic and environmental studies which allow for a deeper understanding of the patient’s biochemical individuality. The evaluation of a patient’s health status typically involves a detailed history, physical exam, conventional laboratory studies and specialized Functional Medicine laboratory studies. Initial treatment is frequently focused on nutrition and lifestyle modifications, including sleep, exercise and stress management. More advanced treatments vary but may include nutrient supplementation and treatment of underlying infections.
